Naumburg bridge set on foundation within the blink of an eye

In the dark days of December 2016, the specialists of Wagenborg Nedlift performed a masterpiece in Naumburg (near Leipzig), Germany.

A colossus weighing 800 tonnes

Near the Naumburg railwaystation, a bridge crossing the railway tracks had to be installed. Not just any bridge but one weighing no less than 800 tonnes and nearly 74 metres long! The giant bridge spans six railway tracks, right next to the train station of Naumburg.

5-hour 'Sperrpausen'

The rail link through Naumburg is an important connection to Leipzig, among other places. This meant that a railway closure should not take longer than 5 hours. Quite a challenge for the Wagenborg Nedlift team and the bridge construction company!

Sound preparation is half the work

A safe and fast method for the placement of the bridge was a prerequisite for this project. Preparing the tracks to drive SPMTs into the bridge would require too much time. Therefore, they opted for a combined placement method involving SPMTs and a 650-tonne crawler crane (type CC3800). This was described in detail and prepared by the engineers from Wagenborg Engineering.

H-hour

In the months prior to installation, the complete bridge was built right next to the track. Shortly before the day of installation, the bridge was jacked up and loaded onto SPMTs. On the other side of the track the 650-tonne crane was ready for action.

Once the track was closed and the power of the catenary was disconnected, it was time for the special operation of placing the bridge to start. The SPMTs brought the bridge in the right position, allowing the crawler crane to take over one end. Next, the 800-tonne colossus was moved onto the foundation exactly according to plan thanks to precise interaction between the SPMTs and the crawler crane.

'Pünktlich'

Exactly 5 hours after the track had been closed it was opened and the timetable of the Deutsche Bahn could once again be operated "pünktlich".

Nice workmanship delivered by the Wagenborg Nedlift specialists!
